View Full Version : I'm in handlebar hell.

Picked up some T-bars (8" rise, 8" pullback) that a local shop had.
From all the crap I read on the various manufacturer sites these are about the only ones that supposedly clear my tank.
Tried the fuckers on and no go.
They were way too low and hit the tank.
FUCK !
Never wanted that much pull back anyway, straight bars is what I wanted, so I have resorted to making my own bars out of copper. Why copper ? Because I have a shit load of it and it's easy to bend/cut/solder.
I hope that once I get the grip position where I want it I can find bars that match or have someone build them for me.
Why does it have to be so confusing ?
Looking at pictures of bars is soo different than holding them in real life.
Rant off.

Wouldn't copper be a little too soft = unsafe?

most of your custom bike shops should have several different style and sizes of bars in stock. Might want to ride your bike over and see how the different styles would fit and feel. You might also want to use a tape measure to get an idea of just how much rise and pull back your after.

Copper will only be temporary.
I just want to sit on the bike and see what feels right. Was thinking of using PVC but copper would be easier to work with.
In my area we don't really have custom bike shops. It's all a bunch of old farts that make the daily pilgrimage to the local HD dealer. To them "custom" means another HD bandanna or something out of the HD catalogue.
Yep, I'm all alone.

I guess copper would be okay for easy prototyping. However, I wouldn't want to be hanging on to a copper handlebar if I was to be caught riding in a thunderstorm!

i wouldn't want to so much as sneeze during a turn.
i'm assuming he's talking about copper tubing and not round stock of course. round stock would be rigid enough for normal riding, assuming no misfortune, but would also be worth like $100 in scrap.

If they hit the tank then it is not 8 inch rise.

Fill the copper tube with quick creet. Bars will be 100% solid. we used to do it with off road bumpers we made out conduit

My 8x8 bars clear the tank. Is it the choke cable outlet that hits it? Try turning the housing.

Guess I should have highlighted this line as most missed it.
I made the copper bars a while ago and have them all measured up. I'll have them made out of something more solid when the time comes.
Picked up some decent t-bars a while ago which will do for now.

I am having some 33" wide, 6" rise, 0 pullback bars made for my 96 vt1100c. I will let you know how it turns out. If I can figure out how to make my pictures smaller, I will post pics.

NOOB FIX for handle bars.........I slid a piece of 1" pipe over ends and pushed ....real hard until bars were bent to where I wanted! Then I rolled em' up a little so they are like little apes, changed the whole feel and style of the bike and if you don't like it, bend em' back. Also I don't need forward controls for some reason with bars changed! SCORE just saved me $400! The mirrors we're a little fucked, kinda tipped inward, fuckin' things we're ugly anyway so I ordered some jap cat eye lookin' ones off Gay-Bay that are short w/ a swivel adjustment near the base, OH and their carbon fiber. I'll gets some pics posted soon. You can see the bars in my pics.

Some of the guys may can tell you better than I but the stock bar and risers measure about 6" rise with approx. 5.5" pullback.
