I'm bringing a backpack with some extra clothes, a tooth brush, some spare fuses and plugs. How the hell are you going to carry a bike jack?

Thanks Bubbzz! I may just take you up on that offer. I think two straight days (each way, plus a lot of riding once there) is gonna kill me on my rock-hard solo seat. I can always put the ugly stocker back on too.

Man Beaker you'll do well to get in 500 miles in a single day and thats hard riding.....

I may have been granted a reprieve. I was planning on riding the entire 1700 miles each way, but my step dad may have come through. He has a single motorcycle trailer that he said I can borrow. It's pretty old and needs a good going over, but I think I may take him up on the offer. I am not looking forward to the aspect of a 1700 mile ride to get to a place where I am going to be riding all week long, then taking another 1700 mile ride to get back to the house. I gotta put a hitch on my car, but I found a hitch and wiring kit on etrailer.com that fits my vehicle.

As far as a trailer that needs a bit of maintance....the most important thing are the wheel bearings, make sure their in good shape and greased, that trailer will take you far.

Jeeezzzz.... You guys are all right. I was hoping to cover 600 miles each day (I've done 300 lotsa times with very little pain), but as it gets closer, I don't know... I was saying to Stella at dinner, that a buddy has offered me his trailer anytime I want it and really, my issue is like Usb's: I don't want to get there and be too sore to ride with you guys all week. I have some thinking to do (damn, I HATE thinking lately!).

Beaker truth is(I'm quoting some things here) "riding is the purest way to go to a rally, be a tough guy and ride"....Shit motorcycles are my passion, and if a rally is more than 400 miles away I'm trailering. Just makes more sense, especially if it's a 4,5,6 day rally. You have to consider quite a few things if your going to ride to a rally that last for a week not including your riding time. You have to figure out how to pack a week or 2 worth of clothes, which is a real challenge on a Cruiser. You have to be prepared for bad weather, which means now your packing rain gear. theres the chance you'll have mechanical problems, now you have to pack tools, you have to sleep so now your packing camping gear......I could go on and on and on. Unless your on an Odyssey theres now reason to ride like hell for 3 straight days and be so burned out you crash for the next 2 days and cruise the Smokies for 2 days then ride like hell for 3 more days to get back to where you started from....this is all providing you don't break down .......man be a tough guy and trailer if possible, just don't tell no one how you got there ....come on tough guy, ride to this rally.

this is like the only vacation i get away from work, and the screamin kids....i'll be damned if i'm gonna get stuck in maybe 8 hours of a down poor of rain on an interstate just to look like some tough guy:freak:

fuck that and fuck anyone that says otherwise:stunned:

Thanks Mel and Bigzz... But after my last post, I called my riding partner (my old man, he'll be 66 this year) and threw out the trailer idea: of course, being my dad, he said, "However you wanna do it son, we're going, but I was really looking forward to the ride with you." So, fuck it. We're riding it. This is a once in a lifetime trip (probably) for us and I want to do it right. Like Pirsig (Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance) or Fonda (Easyrider), it's the journey that counts. I couldn't live with myself if I did this particular motorcycle trip in my truck. As the poet, David Lee Roth once said, " Take the traveller and the tourist, the essential difference is, that the traveller don't know where he's goin', and the tourist don't know where he is!". See you in TN brothers and sisters. Might take two days, might take three, might get sidetracked....

if you carry lots of cash you won't have to carry anything else(just buy as you go and throw it away as you need more)and you can even save on underware by turning em insideout and using em for a second day....

mcvierh
05-24-2009, 09:31 PM
I know what you mean tho Beaker....my wife and I are the same way, we'll ride for days and days all the way to New Mexico and back on a 2 week vacation, just because we can.

This is gonna be a good trip. The only thing that'll stop me is a week's worth of rain.

Ya, plan on taking the hubs off and packing the bearings, plus bringing a couple of replacements, just in case. Gonna take a couple of spare tires and rims too. I understand your reasoning Beaker, but I don't have my old man to ride there with. My trip would be 1700 miles of monotony. I just got news at work yesterday that I got a promotion. So, I'm hoping that the new position and the new shift doesn't impact my travel plans. I have been looking forward to this for quite a while. It would really suck if I got sidetracked at the eleventh hour. I am definitiely planning on being there, unless I hear otherwise. I should know for sure by the end of the week, or the middle of next week at the latest.

Thanks guys. I will be doing everything humanly possible to be there. I have really been looking forward to this trip. But, I have to be a realist. There are three FOS on the shift I am going to, including me, and the most senior one has master leave scheduled for the approximate same time that I have it planned. I have my leave approval signed off, so it should be "carved in stone". But, one thing I have learned in my years of Government Service is that nothing is truly "carved in stone". Hopefully, they won't hold that against me, as I had the leave approved as a Supervisor and not an FOS. We will see.

You're making me blush brother! Actually, the way it works, it's just more responsibility for the same money, or maybe just a little less. As an FOS I get a salary increase, but I lose some compensatory field pay, as it is alot less field time and alot more office time. The things we do to get ahead..........

My wife says that they are finally recogniizing my more prominent character trait. She says is stands for "Full of Shit"! Actually, it is a Field Operations Supervisor. It is basically the guy who is responsible for everything that goes wrong on the unit, as you are in charge of the unit.

I'm definitely in that line with NOBODY. Not an ass man myself, especially when it's my ass! But, I've still got upwards of 15 years left before I plan to retire, so I gotta start climbing the ladder at some point. It's all about the "high three" in the Government. Your retirement is based upon a percentage of what your high three years of salary are. So, the higher your salary ends up, the better money you make in retirement. Gotta play the game so me and momma can travel the country when we finally manage to get the girls out of the house and through college.

Yep. You gotta get tenure. I fought that urge (and still do) but at the end of the day, it's about you and yours. The niceties at retirement parties don't pay the bills.

All in all, Government service has been really good to my family. Steady work, job security, benefits, lots of good stuff. And, at the end of the day, it is an honorable profession (law enforcement) and gives the kids a sense that their daddy is fighting the good fight. Get to go home and see the family almost every night too. Definitely an improvement over my days of "over the road" driving. Not that OTR drivinig is a bad profession. I give those guys all the props in the world. Without them, the world comes to a stop, but it is hard on a family man.

That's pretty damn tempting but, at this point, would likely cost me around half my income for long time (if you know what I mean). Wifey wouldn't like it if I took off with "the other woman" for a week.

Def hafta hook up for another ride or two though.
