Yes...

Its true.... Not only the 750 riders are making the bike "cool". I decided to take a diffrent approach then the typical 1100 rider... Instead of making it more "cush", I opted to make it more badd@55!! :pissed:

So I bought the bike (1999 Honda Shadow Spirit) from a salvage yard (not running.... hit a tree @ 65mph), and have been working on it feverously for the last couple months. I have documented a lot of the process, and did ALL the work myself. I was hesitant to post and get flamed, but when I got the "nod" from a group of Harley bikers at a bike night, I knew I had to put it up....

My buddy had a Honda Shadow and I rode it about 2 summers ago and fell in love. This is what prompted a crotch rocket rider of 9 years to convert...

It is a work in progress, and no where near done.... So please be kind. I wanted you to see what you can do to these bikes with a little free time, and know how...

She stayed stock for 1 day.... pics are big... be patient...

First things first... Those horrid Lights had to go.... So....

I bought some markers at Ironpony, a can of VHT NiteShades, busted out a dremel and placed an order....

With the dremel I hacked off the front markers and the rear liscense plate holder....

Bam.... One less piece of metal in the world...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3356/3552855989_7b2de122eb.jpg?v=0

And two less ugly Orange markers in the world.... Now Ill replace the back with these....

And only if it was as easy as doing it in 3 seconds..... The truth is I ran into some snags here.... Basically I had to fab a plud to fill a gap... If you plan on replacing your rear lights hit me up Ill tell you how to do it without a seam....

Here is the Stock paint and Taillight.... Dont worry, they are both changing....

Basically 3 caots of VHT, and 5 clear.... a lot of wetsanding, polish, and ta-dah!!!

Looks like you're making some progress, noob, but don't think for a minute that the typical 1100 rider around here prefers their bike to be "cush". Lots of badass bikes on this site with lots of work put into them.

Like the direction you are going with the 1100.
I just jumped ship onto a cruiser last week and have no plans of making my 1100 a couch.

Thanks for the positive response so far guys!! I know wit out a doubt there are some lurking 1100s out there that aren't all about "cush" and more about hard core... MrRngr94 Love the WWII flash back theme of your 1100!! The ammo boxes are a nice touch... I used to drive a Deuce once upon a time...

Just in case you guys were wondering the bike is done.... I just want to keep you all in suspense while I get this post out... lol...

So... On to the rear fender which is where I started, because it had the least cosmetic damage... I have tons and tons of pics, do if you all have something specific you'd like to see let me know...

The rear fender: So the whole theme of the bike was supposed to be flat black with pearl white flames.... It changed over the course of building this bike, and Ill explain why later...

The following pics show the basics... Sanded down the rear fender, fixed the body work (looked like someone used the fender for BB gun practice) with rage gold or dynatron filler. I sanded prior to filler with 120 grit, then after filler stepping 120, 220, 400. I then used High build primer instead of glazing putty or icing. The primer was wet sanded 600 grit, then 800 grit between layers, and 1000 grit on the final coat. I then shot it with color which was a standard flat black base coat (no frills), in between coats it was knocked down with 800, then sanded smooth with 1000 grit. All and all, about 4-5 coats of color. Then the final coat was sanded 1000, 1500, 2000, and buffed out with 3m products.

Here are some pics of the process

Houston we have a FugUp... Ok... Don't get me wrong the paint came out really nice, but more of a hazy gunmetal.... I don't know how else to describe it... I figured I'd just leave it, and spray it again next spring... So on to the tank to get the base coats done there.... oh and a lot more body work...

The bike looks pretty good for hitting a tree, I have seen more damage done by a deer than that tree did, must have been a soft wood species...

Mods are looking good and for sure keep us updated.

How much success have you had in getting the salvage title transfered into a street legal title?

Here in Illinois it is almost impossible for an individual to do it, one has to be a registered shop with the state and have a salvage rider on the shops state license.

It's not expensive to do just the state here make you jump through hoops to get the salvage license, I have been looking into doing it because there is a demand here to restoring salvaged bikes.

Anywho on my 1100 Spirit my plans have been pretty boring so far. bags, wind shield, exhaust, jet kit.

I did rework the OEM airbox cover by opening it up and using a flat K+N for greater air flow over the oval filter designed by Honda which IMO is way to small to get enough air flowing to the carbs to make any real power, and the mod worked well with a stage 1 jet kit and DG pipes, she runs well.

Now if I could only get the damn bike to stop in a timley manner...

Looking into building dual disc set up in front for a winter project on the SS1100, but for now I am going with a S/S braided line to see if this helps out up front and possibly a larger caliper off of a sport bike honda model.

I just need to do some research here on brakes and see what has worked and what does not!

Later,
