So eventhough it is snowing :furious2: I went to the local Honda stealer and got some goodies for my VT700. A few things I needed and a few things I didn't but wanted anyway. Some custom type mirrors and a shiney radiator cover and stuff like that. When the weather gets nice again, I'll snap a couple of more pics and post them.

Worked a little on the airbox mod today, I forgot about another motorcycle I had in the storage shed. Got some of the parts I needed off of it. There's a little more "creative engineering" that I have to do before it's done, and I have to get a holesaw bit that's the right size. Not to mention a little welding :furious2: I'll hit my neighbor up for that tomorrow, remember, I can't weld worth a shit. This isn't exactly something simple, but it's gonna be so cool when I'm done. Plus I can guarantee that there isn't another VT700 that will have this.
I have to raid the shed tomorrow, to get a section of cable that I need for this, I will definitely get pic posted as soon as I'm done!
I'm modifying a plastic airbox. I've mentioned; welding, cable section, holesaw bit...can you figure out what the hell I'm doin'? :headscrat

I hope McDonald's doesn't sue me but...I'm lovin' it! :beam:
I took it to the local dealer to day, he said to hang on a min. and went inside.
When he came back he brought all the other employees with him.
I'm kinda proud of this one, cuz usually my projects well...frankly, don't turn out quite the way I plan them, but this one came out better.
I've got alot of pix to resize, weed out, and figure out a good way to describe how to do it. It may take a couple of posts to get this one explained, cuz it's not exactly as easy as drillin' out the guts of your muffler. <--- I do recommend that still.
Anyway, I should have it posted before the weekend is up.
Next on my list is forward controls...I think I figured it out. :headscrat

And now he is a moderator.. this thread is ancient.
But I just got an old shadow (85, 1100c) and it's my first bike. Still learning to ride but wanna get some wider handle bars on it. It needs some maintenance but runs well overall. If anyone has any good DIY tips on cleaning out the carburetor then I'd appreciate them.

Just recently purchased my 85 Honda Shadow and love it! This was my upgrade from a Suzuki GS550L. No comparison! Working on some chrome upgrades but are hard to find. Also thinking about replacing stock exhaust with something a bit louder but not obnoxious. Not sure whats even available for this bike yet. Any suggestions would be great!

There's shit for aftermarket support for these old bikes, usually you just have to get creative. Check out the pics/mods sticky thread above this, you'll be able to see what pipes/mods others have done and where to find most of them.

You can start out by dumping some seafoam in the tank and running that through. Other than that, without typing up an entire walkthrough, some tips are as follows:
1. Most guys avoid carb cleaner on these old bikes as it tends to ruin certain rubber seals and gaskets. Warm soapy water and compressed air is usually enough to clean out what you've got going on. Carb cleaner is only really necessary for really nasty varnish removal.
2. Be very careful with the old ass diaphragms and give em a good inspection for holes/tears while you're in there.
3. That's all i've really got time for right now, get a fucking manual
Once again, welcome, now fuck off

M@Man your not alone! Here's my 86 vt700c. I've done a little here and there, mostly maintenance, because the previous owner treated it like shit. Changed oil, plugs, air filter, brakes, etc. Im still looking for a new rear seat and a sissy bar pad (cracked from the elements). But enough of that enjoy the pic. I'll post better ones later.

carb cleaning vid
Not exact for our Shadows but close.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIa23_0Hn9IGet carb kits and do it all. Diaphragms are still available, but cost a mint. Treat them nice.
No carb cleaner anywhere near anything rubber unless you are going to replace it. Be careful to dry the carb out completely and allow it to sit a while. Even some residual carb cleaner can trash your float needle etc.
Clean jets out with nylon fishing line, not wire.

Just sayin hey. Here is my 85 VT700. I have replaced the pipes with a set of tubes and homebrew baffle. I didn't like the stock look and wanted a little more rumble, without being too loud. I am eventually going to chrome them I think, but for now I like them better than the stock pipes, and I got a few extra MPG out of the deal. Cost about $10 at the local scrap steel yard. I am slowly working on forward controls and hidden handlebar wires.

Same boat with the '85 VT700. Immediate plans are:
-Modify the seat so it sits a lot lower
-Forward controls
-Different bars and risers
After that we'll see. I think that will at least be the start of the look I want for this bike. Below is a pic of how I bought it. I still have the windshield, saddle-bags, and tank pouch, but they will only go on for long road trips........

I just had mine torn down to do a head gasket and when I pulled the seat, I sat on the frame just to see what that height felt like and I really liked it. I am trying to brain storm a way to lower the seat and either remove the rear seat and go solo, or just put a small pillon seat on. These bikes are a little too small to ride 2up on (I'm 6'2" so it is a little small to start with  ) so I am not too worried about the rear seat.
Post up any mods you do. I would be interested to see what you come up with.
BTW, good looking bike.

I have a '83. I stripped all the foam off the pillion, cut the upright portion off the shell, glued on 1" of foam and covered with Naugahyde. The mounting bracket from the back was relocated to the bottom and holes drilled in the fender to bolt thru.
The computer boxes and all wiring remains as is.

The vertical portion of the sissy bar was cut off and the top surface ground and polished.
The rider's seat is next to be reshaped and recovered.
