Hello Everyone -
I am a new rider and have a question that I am sure you guys would know the answer too. I have a Shadow Aero 750 if that matters.
If I am riding down the road and run out of gas, what happens? I know that is worded horribly and sounds stupid, but can I just switch to the reserve fuel "on-the-go"? Does the bike become hard to control and sputter? Do I need to pull over and then switch to reserve?
I would like to know the answer before it one day happens to me to kind of hold down the "freak out" effect that it my pose on myself.
Thanks in advance,
Abraham

easy there NOOB, you won't crash:)
The bike WILL spit and sputter, that means you are outta gas, take one hand and switch to the reserve setting while you are riding, keeping thr bike steady with your other hand. After you switch to resever, it will pick back up in about 10 second. Then you be good to go for at least another 30 miles or so. make sure to keep it on reserve when you fill it up with gas or else you will not fill the reserve and when you run out again, you will be out of gas completely. after you fill, switch back to "on" and you are good to go. good luck NOObo!!!.

Nice... thanks for that tip about filling up the reserve part of the tank at the gas pump.
I knew someone here would have the answer! :)
Thanks calicruiser

Yea, you really gotta watch out for that "reserve part of the tank" not gettin' filled up.
WTF?

I thought you had to fill the reserve from the other gas cap?

i thought the RESERVE gas went in that RESERVoir thingy on the handlebars. i never fill it up cuz it's such a pain to unscrew it everytime.

Keep in mind that the aero reserve switch is not in the same location as on the spirit. If you aren't comfortable, pull the bike to the side of the road. You would have to reach half way down the tank on the left side and then to the bottom. Fumbling may cause you to crash. Keep that in mind.
Another thing about reserve.....if you've ever removed the petcock (yes I did say that) out of the tank you'd see how the reserve just switches to allow fuel from the bottom part of the tank to flow into the carbs. There is no mystery or hidden area that needs to be filled.

It's good that you said that Jake, I was almost startin' to feel guilty.

I can see someone reaching over the side of the bike while they are driving and trying to get it into reserve (had a friend's wife wipe out this year doing that. more damage to the bike then her, but dangerous).
As for the reserve filling, I could just see someone leaving it on reserve to fill that section up first and then forget and leave it on reserve.........next time it sputters, no safety net. Just got to remember to fill the bottom half of the tank first and then the top. :wink_2:

I remember in the MSC they had us switch to reserve so we would know where and how to do it. The first time I crossed one of the largest and longest bridges in my area guess what happened. bluh bluh .....bluh...blug yup ran out. I used some quick thnking to switch my Sabre to reserve. The thing about pulling off the road is in my case there was no shoulder. SoI would have been up Shits creek. Next time your riding at slow speed in a semi controled environment practice switching to your reserve it wont hurt anything. JUST REMEMBER TO TAKE IT OFF RESERVE WHEN YOU DONE!!!!!!!!!!! :Moped:

That was one thing that wasn't really covered in my MSC and therefore I really didn't think about it until I was riding on my own. Thanks for the training idea flaminsabre... I'll give it a go sometime in the near future.

caliDamn, I have never thought about that. I assumed that the tank was one space and that the reserve switch just gave you access to the bottom of the tank.
Ok, so another stupid question. If you did not do that switch over while you filled, can you flip it after you fill and let it fill the reserve portion, then flip it back?

I think I read it in the manual that you need to keep it on reserve when you fill the tank or else you will not fill the reserve (or bottom) portion of the tank. I could be wrong, er the manual could be wrong or maybe I made the whole thing up:) who knows!

All the reserve setting does is allows you to get gas all the way the in the bottom of the tank. The normal position does not go all the way. Any time you fill your tank it will take care of the ability to have a reserve not matter what the switch is set on at the time. It is all one tank on our bikes.

Croach is right. As far as the 750 Spirit is concerned It is all one tank. Doesnt matter if it is set on reserve or normal, as soon as you start putting gas in, the reserve area or tank bottom gets filled first.
If that wasn't the case I would have run out of reserve gas about a dozen times already.
