My daughter wanted to try it as well, and ordered a bottle via the internet from France (I think)

We both tried it, with the sugar cube etc, and it was about as nasty tasting as you can get. We couldnt even get past one drink. Maybe she ordered a cheap bottle, but knowing her I doubt it. Now this is a drink that probably could fry your brains.

What people saw in that shit is beyond my imagination.

But if you never tried it, you should. Not sure if there is any one in the states that sell it, but you can get it over the internet for sure.

Your right, at least that is what my daughter told me (she is in law school specializing in international law)

It is not illegal to own a bottle or purchase one from a foreign source, but it is illegal to set up shop in the US and sell it.

It is ok for a foreign based company to sell and ship it to an end user in the US. I think there is a restriction on how many bottles you can order at one time.

She purchased her bottle from either France or Germany (cant remember now) through the internet. They range quite a bit on price. Some brands can be pretty expensive.

There is a lot of controvery over that issue. There was a special bout absinthe on one of the cable channels. I guess in the early 1900's there were some criminal cases where the defense was that the absinthe caused the problem not the person. That is when everyone started believing that it was bad (in the US).

In that TV special, they presented 'experts' who claimed it could alter your mind, and just as many who said that was a load of bunk. It was very popular drink back then and 1000's of people drank it without any ill effect. So who knows.

That wornwood is supposed to be "different". My daughter said to be sure to verify that it is the original formula when you purchase it. Some dealers will sell it using substitute ingredient that creates the same taste but without the wormwood. But she said they will tell you on the site if it is original or not.

I think you should get Sinister to drink it first. If he survives, then you get one.

For what its worth, here's my experience with absinthe: I've never had any hallucinogenic secondary effects after drinking large quantities. The best I ever got were crazy lucid dreams (which were pretty cool) and really drunk. Usually, I just mix up a drink or sip some neat - for me the effect is no different than doing the same with any other relatively strong alcohol.

Quality of absinthe varies greatly. A lot of it is utter shit. But it doesn't have to be. Stay away from Czech stuff like Sebors and Hills. Stay away from home brew crap or kits sold on ebay. Spanish has a lot of anise so it tastes licorishy. Of the Spanish, I like N.S. and Seggara. French and Swiss are more herbal. Un Emile is good, so is Kubler.

I've currently got 2 bottles of Spanish absinthe that I got from www.spiritscorner.com (http://www.spiritscorner.com/) a couple of years ago. They are a great, reputable dealer. I've also heard good things about Liqueurs de France at: http://www.absintheonline.com/ They have Un Emile. Shipping is the expensive part. The best way to do it is do one big order with all your friends and split the shipping.

As far as I understand, wormwood is listed by the FDA as a banned/controled food additive. That's why absinthe can't be sold here. It's not a crime or anything to order it overseas and have it shipped here. Occassionally orders do get snagged by customs, but it seems to have more to do with sending 'dangerous' alcohol through airmail than the wormwood.

It looks like you have had a lot of experience with this stuff. I know the bottle my daughter got tasted awful. But now that you mentioned Czech - I think that is where she did order it from.

What is it supposed to taste like? Is is similiar to anise or is that just the Spanish version?

By the way you describe it, I might give it another try as well.

If it was czech, I feel your pain. The stuff is utter swill.

I'm no absinthe expert - I've tried 10 or so brands from various countries. The stuff's pretty good and I drink it when I'm in the mood. Really, I prefer scotch. Anyway, mostly all absinthes have anise, so they all have somewhat of that flavor. The Spanish and Portuguese seem to use it more than others, so theirs generally have a stronger licorish-like flavor. Fennel is also a really common ingredient, which to me also has a licorishy flavor. Otherwise, when the anise doesn't predominate, you get a lot of woodsy or earthy tastes sometimes nuts, or grass, sometimes citrus - it really depends on the brand. In some brands the alcohol taste predominates, which I don't like. Diva and Mari Mayans are like that.

All in all, its a fairly bitter drink, but not in a bad way (at least to me). It's often cut with water and sugar, that can help with the bitterness. With some cold water and sugar its very refreshing. Also, the really cool thing about adding cold water to many brands is they will 'louche' which means they'll gets cloudy (yes, I'm easily amused).

The La fee verte site has a great buyers guide that gives reviews of most commercial absinthes. I've found it really helpful.

funny you should mention that. There is one more way an absinthe drunk is a little odd. I've found that I stay more aware or lucid throughout the night. Its hard to describe and it may be me just wanting to be cool - but I swear that's what it's like

hey guys and gals...... the just recently visited my sister and upon leaving, i saw a bottle of absinthe on her counter. I was pretty disapointed to see that. Hey if your into that stuff, great but here are a couple of concerns you may want to think about.....just for your safety....

If you are getting absinthe, make sure its the "original" BUT...PLEASE be wary if you are on any sort of medications, antidepressants, blood pressure, heart, seizure etc, this is based from herbs which may counteract or increase the actions of your medications. It is supposed to act as a "speedball" depress neuro part of brain yet increase heart rate.

Just please be careful before trying new things, I wouldnt want to hear....well, you know.

just read this about absinthe... my buddy from high school is russian and spends two months out of the summer in russia. he said the new cool thing every one does with absinthe is to burn/inhale/drink. wierd, but let me explain. first they take the cup with absinthe, they light it on fire and put another cup on top, trapping the smoke and fumes, then they slide the top glass onto the bar(still upside down) and stick a straw in the bottom and suck the smoke out, then take the shot... dont know how healthy it is, or isnt, but when he got back he brought a few bottles and we did it like that and i got obliterated. im 6'3" and two fiddy and i couldnt walk. we tried it the conventional way with the sugar cubes and shit but it wasnt nearly as cool. when we inhaled it first we all felt a little high or something, really loopy and giggly maybe it was just us. that shit tastes really good mixed with dr. pepper too. anyone thinking about trying it, i would definately suggest it, it's a drunk like no other.
