Gonna be painting my tank soon and I wanted to get your esteemed opinions on some things.

1. I heard from some people that powder coating is a less durable painting solution because if you ever get a scratch you can't touch it up.

2. Trying to shop it around, but I wanted to get a baseline estimate from you guys.

How much should I expect to pay for the following:
a. powder coating
b. matte black paint
c. gloss black paint
d. just a clear coat on top of the bare metal (considering going for the rat bike look)

Sorry for posting this question like this, but after a failed cursory look to find the answers to it with the search button, I had to call it because I have to go to work. Thanks for all the advice guys!

if you go with the bare metal you could always use clear powder coat. i am thinking of doing that to my tank and fenders after painting

If you go with bare metal (very cool by the way), why not just rattle-can clear coat it yourself? That's the rat rod way. Same for flat black. Cheap. Easy. Looks kool.

RUSTOLEUM-Textured black can't go wrong....very durable and cheap and by the can.

What he said. Or, Krylon; dries fast for several coats and no runs. They both make clear too if you go with bare metal. DO IT! ('cause I wanna see it and you're as good a guinea pig as any...):heh_heh:

I heard that using a rattle can on the tank isn't a good idea because it doesn't play nice with gasoline.

It'll work. Just do a few coats and try not to slop gas when you fill up. I've done several and they've all held up well. :beatnik2:

if you look at the link for colorite in the factory paint sticky, you can get a clear in a can that will hold up to gasoline.
