I seemed to get lots of questions about my latest combo project 14" over forks and 250 rear so i decided to start a new thread so we do not clutter the raked fork thread.
IF YOU ARE NOT MECHANICALLY INCLINED OR DO NOT HAVE ANY FRIENDS WHO KNOW HOW TO WELD THEN STOP READING AT THIS POINT.
here we go
Step #1 remove the rear fender...rear seat.... and get out the METAL cutter..... it gets messy from this point on.
Step#2 Cut the rear fender mount horns at the point where they start to rise out of the seat pan....... while you have the cutter handy it is not a bad idea to get to work on the pipes like i did .....home-made shorties and they sound awesome.

step #3 remove the rear swing arm assembly...[battery/fuse/relay box assy needs to be removed to give access to all the silly bolts and nuts.]
http://pictures.sprintpcs.com/mi/86426842_294064965_0.jpeg?limitsize=280&outquality=56&ext=.jpg&border=2,255,255,255,1,0,0,0,0
Step#4 Go shopping for a 18 x8.5" wheel and 250/40/18 tire I HIGHLY RECOMMEND wire rims to match your front...saves you from buying a front tire and rim to match the rear.
mount the tire on the rim and start dreaming about your new rear swing arm configuration

Thanks fo sharing this with us. Nice start on the step by step. Could you get some close ups on the swing arm and clearances? What arrangement are you going with for the drive (jack shaft)?
This definitely isn't for someone that isn't comfortable around the shop and welder.

Jack shaft??? What I really want to do is change to a belt drive...but everyone I've talked to says the chain setup is better and more reliable. It also appears to be much simpler with the chain setup...no need to worry about clearances to the frame. I also started out with a hard tail in mind but rode my buddy's hard tail harley and it was one heck of a rough ride so I'm going back to a soft tail design and i plan to use my stock shock/spring into the new swing arm assembly. I'll try to document my new swingarm so i can reproduce it again...'cos most of my riding buddies are drooling anxious to see how mine turns out so they can do the same....I guess I'll be the scape goat this time around again.

It's another gear used with the front gear to move the chain out to gain clearance for the tire. I don't have a VLX, but I can't see there being enough clearance on the chain side for the 250 unless you are shifting the motor over or off setting the rear tire to one side (which would create a few more issues to deal with).
Just wondering how you are approaching the chain clearance issue. Lots going on in this project.

Offsetting the motor is the easy way out but I tried that on the first project shadow and it really affects the balance and makes it hard to ride without tilting to oneside to balance it and its a bitch to lean into corners on the unbalanced side. On this one I'd like to offset the drive sprocket with a spacer and leave the motor intact and balanced. The only hurdle i have now is clearance to the gear link arm 'cos now the drive sprocek is directly infront of the gear shifter assembly...but i'll find a way around that for sure.
I'm definately not screwing around with the rear tire off center that's like driving with screwey alignment and not good on wet days BAD BAD idea.

i dont know if its been done to a motorcycle yet but i had a lifted ranger and we fabricated a horizontel suspension system. looked really sick after it was done ill see if i can upload some pics, but since your in the fabrication stage this might be somthing up your alley it would have people drooling for sure, and could easily be hidden.

okay here we go... got the swing arm off the bike and cut it up then added spacers to accomodate the bigger tire the welder did a heck of job ........ couldn't find a 1" rear axle so we made one out of thompson rod and drilled and tapped both ends to mount the tire to the swing arm... added a harley rear sprocket and a harley brake caliper... then mounted a west coast choppers rear wide tire fender..... then made a custom strutless fender mount and then finished up the seat pan frame.......
beech4u2
02-27-2006, 02:11 AM
part 2.... seat pan was made out of fiber glass bondo and then the foam and leather was stretched over it.... I also used 1" tubing to close off the seat area to clean up the rear end after cutting off the fender mounting horns... you will notice the rectangular steel tubing used to brace the bottom of the swing arm after widening it up to fit the bigger tire... ended up making a spacer and welding up 2 sprockets to space out the drive end of the chain... but now i need a custom shift linkage to avoid hitting the new spaced out sprocket......Yeah i know it looks a bit dusty.....was doing some final fiberglass bondo to replace the stock side covers and boy .. or boy do they look sweet.... more pics will follow when it's all washed up and ready for daytona in the next week!! I hope this helps ya'll out there!!!
I have a shit load of stock rear end parts sitting around so any body needs anything... holler at me....before i start listing the shit on ebay.......

Patience... patience... it should be ready in the next 2 weeks.. just got the lights and chain in today and need to start the wiring and "bench" driving to break in the components before the actual road test next weekend ahead of the daytona weekend of march 13th....

How's the chain alignment? from the pics it looks like there's going to be a lot of side load on it.

Okay so i missed my Daytona deadline.........but i still made it but the bike didn't... it looked like shit with the 14 over forks without the raked trees......so I went back to the stock and lowered it 2 inches instead........the new chain is mounted and the wiring is still in progress ...............i made my own custom license plate mount in 5 mins and it looks awesome and it cost almost nothing...... okay back to the real topic here!!! There is no side load on the chain everything lines up great i had to cut a bit of the rear seat support bar to give me plenty clearance for the chain....just in case i hit a bump cos it looked pretty close 1/8" clearance made me nervous. the modified sprocket is actually 2 sprokects fused/welded together with a spacer to give me the needed offset to match the rear sprocket. The 1st sprocket has the gear teeth cut off and only serves the purpose of mounting...... everything lines up ............everything runs it rides much better than stock to my surprise and looks cool as hell.... now i gotta finish the wiring... but i always seem to get distracted and end up doing something else on the bike that was not part of the original project. I changed the handle bars... then I changed the risers to the VTX style risers then i changed the mirrors now i'm looking at the cyclops headlamp next ... and installing a master cylinder to pump my new rear disc brakes......now those are pretty cool!!! This Japaneese fucker actually looks better than half the HD's I saw at Daytona.........
Now for those of you who missed Daytonna here is a sample pic to wet your appetite for next year!!

hi guys this beast if finally done!! I tried to load an avi file up here but that didn't work out with all the restrictions....... if you are interested and have broadband access drop me a line and i'll send it to you via regular email...... mine is beech4u@aol.com
Also i got lots of email asking how much the entire project cost and where i got most of my stuff from...... well believe it or not thhis entire project was done on ebay.... starting with the bike for $2500 the wheels for $300 brake rotor $55 sprocket $35 brake rotor $ 65 avon 250 Tire $198 the zx7 rear master cylinder $15 and the toil of cutting dreaming and finally putting everything together.... priceless!!!! the rest of the budget was spent on fiberglass bondo or the seatpan and side covers and also foam and leather to wrap the seat with!! if you have the time and patience and and ebay account the anything is possible!!
Good luck!!

Did you have to rejet after you cut your pipes into homemade shorties? Also did you remove the heatshielding off of the pipes?
beech4u2
07-16-2006, 11:04 PM
yes i had to rejet the carb i used a stage 1 kit and put in bigger fuel nozzles [152]... heat shields i kept them cos they looked cool after i cut the pipes.... just make sure you cut the pipes just where the heat shields end and you should be able to use them i used automotive exhaust tips to finish off the sawed off ends.

Bad ass bike bro!
Thanks!! I just figured I'd do something different to mine.. the whole story for me is kinda silly but here we go...I'll tell you how I got started...
....Twas a cool Autumn night.... and I had just gotten home from Bike night in cleveland and was sitting at home watching OCC drunk as hell and reading my email and that just so happened to be the episode where retard Mikey built his very own chopper in 2 commercials and I'm sitting there saying shit.. .If he can do that so can I ........so armed armed with a laptop and several cans of beer I started to shop around on ebay and the rest is history.. the bike and all the parts I used for this project were bought on ebay all in one night!! I started out with a bike frame and wheels... and after i sobered up and opened the garage and realized I was too far gone to turn back i kept going...... the only thing I did change was .... realized it was cheaper to buy a whole honda bike than a harley or S&S motor so I bought a honda shadow mainly for the engine but realized It was much simpler and cheaper to register a honda rather than a custom bike so i went back to the shadow and modified it and resold the frame on ebay.
Plus we all know honda engines run for ever and do not leak like the harleys we all see riding around town....So there... ......Since then I've done a shadow 750 hard tail [pic attached] for my friend and my next project will be a 3 wheeled bike... [T-rex] 2 wheels in front and one rear made out of a kawasaki ninja 1200... i just started shopping for a donor bike...... I'll keep you posted!!

beech4u2
08-02-2007, 06:41 PM
...... is that a stock 750 tank that's been stretched and raised on the frame?
No the tank is not stretched per se but tricked out to look that way... It is mostly cosmetic sheet metal that was welded and folded to make it look like a stretched tank. I chose to not screw around too much with the stock tank cos if it leaks... you know the rest of the whatifs..... so it's all cosmetic but sure looks good. Tack welded sheet metal bent and ground down and finished to look real.. Fake but attention grabbing!!
GostRider
10-24-2007, 10:49 PM
it looks like the frame is stretched on the up tubes and back bone ???? if so we need a how to on that .....
beech4u2
10-30-2007, 10:06 PM
Actually it isn't stretched....the triple trees are 6 degree raked and the fork tubes are 10" over stock from forks by frank... if you noticed the bike sits kinda funny... the bottom of the engine and frame should be parallel to the ground but due to the excessive length of the fork tubes and insufficient rake the bike ended up looking raised... but ridable...
beech4u2
10-30-2007, 10:09 PM
One other trick to adjust the neck without doing any cutting/welding is to drop the rear end as far as possible when you make it a hard tail... it results in the neck raking out to give the impression/look of a stretched frame that combined with a 6 degree triple tree does the trick!!

In case you missed it this thread was dedicated to my shadow VLX 600. not the shadow 750. The 750 pic i posted on here was depicting my friends 750 we chopped up and was explaining the whole point of raking both the front and back.
To answer your question ...no I don't work for anybody.... If you read the whole thread all the way thru from the begining it shows you detailed pics of my vlX600 project with pictures of it at different stages in my garage at home with fibergalss bondo dust not some chopper shop so i suggest you either read the whole thread or go plug your buddies chopper shop somewhere else.
In life.....Some Ride....Some tinker..... Some build .......and as always some haters just plain bitch.
if you really care to see either of these bikes come on down to bike night at Quaker steak and lube in cleveland on wednesdays and see both bikes for yourself mine and the friends 750. I'm live in the detroit area oakland county to be exact so come on down to Boomers in waterford on thursdays and see the bike and eat your words and heart out.... you never know you might get a few ideas to fix ya trike

Oh my god!!! that 250 tyre looks amazing!!!! wish I could do that on my bike!!
I like the look about big, low profile tyre on the rear, could you give me some advice about that without cutting or modifying the swinging arm? mine is a VT 600C from 1992...
Thanks and warm regard from Spain!!!!

200 o maybe 230 low profile would do the thang for me, what Iīm after itīs a big butt on my shadow, but I donīt like the look, letīs say a 200/70 15.....what is the same wheel only a liīl wider...I mean., any way, without modifying swinging arm, to mount a 200 to 230....low profile ( letīs say 40 to 50 max...) maybe change the rear wheel rim???
Thanks!!!!

Thinking about cutting my pipes like you did. Did you start with factory pipes? On my 93 VLX, the rear cylinder's pipe is quite a bit smaller diameter than the front pipe. Were your pipes anything like this?

Yes I basicaloy chopped the stock cans off the pipes and dressed the ends up with muffler tips.

Dude.. I sooooo wanted to...but given the fact. That all I was working with was a 600 I had to compromise at some point..

Awesome bike! How is your rear caliper mounted? Is it also a ZX9 part?

sorry man.. got busy and haven't been back in a while.. sorry for the late reply..
but the answer to your question is No I only used the Zx-9 for the rear master cylinder. the caliper sprocket, wheel & rotor are all harley gear mix and matched years and models...lol
Kinda bored right about now and considering doing something else with it.... looking around here at the forums for some killer idea i hadn't thought of ....lol

These are for crotch rockets, so there would still be a ton of fabbing, or design your own.(Nevermind, see below)
I'd love to have a single side swing arm, but since I'm cheap, I'll eventually work on chopping my extra swing arm to put a 240 on my 750SS.
