I,m headed north of chicago the 8th. of September for my daughters graduation....Naval Base.
Question:: I,ve heard it,s murder around this city, especially on a motorcycle.
Your answer will make me decide .....Car? or Motorcycle?
What,s the best way to get around Chicago from Indiana interstate?
Any help would be cool!
Thanks, June

Personally I try to avoid any metro area on the bike. I'm sure Galager will disagree, (he's in NYC). Too many things to watch for.

But if YOU feel up to it, then do it.

It is always better if you can avoid a major city, but sometimes that is impossible. If anything try to avoid hitting the metro during rush hours. If you keep alert, it is not too bad at all.

Is it just you or a more than one bike?

I assume you going to Great Lakes Naval Base? Whatever, try to get there closer to 2 than 3, and you should be able to get through without too much anguish. If traffic gets heavy, make sure you 2 keep as close as you can to each other - reduces the chance of someone cutting inbetween you.

Chicago traffic sucks. If you are going North and stay on the higways, it's not too bad, but traffic is bad, and there is usually some construction, plus tolls. It is an adventure. If you are feeling adventurous, take the bikes. Just keep alert and be prepared to be stuck in traffic, especially coming in from Indiana to Il. It's always bad! Lots of stop and go. Good luck.

PITTSBURGH ! Just moved my youngest daughter, Angela, to Pittsburgh. She is pursuing a dual degree program. Going for her Masters at Carnegie Mellon and a Juris doctorate from University of Pittsburgh. She must have gotten her brains from her mother, becuase it sure as hell aint me.

If you have riden your bike in Pittsburgh, then Chicago will be about the same. Personally I think Pittsburgh is worse in that that it has the most convoluted streets I have ever seen.

The roads are shit around here, very bumpy, pot holes, etc. If you have a hard tail you will shit out your kidneys!

I'm sure it's worse now. A couple of winters with salt on the roads, makes everything worse. Makes you want to move back doesn't it?

I have a Sister who lives in Bollingbrook (sp?). I visit her every few years. Suburbs are pretty good, but the city streets are horrible. I bet the streets in Baghdad and Kandahar are better than Chicago.
