Just remembered my last post before the old server was booted. See the attached picture. For those who wants to order 'throttle set' cables in custom length, you have to give this meassurement beside the length of the outer sleeve (meassure your stock length, It's better to have it slightly longer).

I ordered Barnett and the wire for push cable was not long enough, short only by half and inch! It was impossible to attach. I've tried to replace the wire but the new one is not as thin & flexibe, thus make my throttle twist very stiff. Now I'm just using the pull cable while trying to find a better replacement wire.

So much trouble for these expensive shit!

That's a good point. Thanks for the heads up!

What about clipping about 1/2" or so off of each end of the bars??

That really sucks. What did Barnett have to say about it? Did you contact them? I only ask, because I bought Barnett cables and all was good and they were great to work with.

Maybe things have changed. When I ordered mine, I just told them what bike I had and then how much over or under stock cable length I wanted.

Hope I'm not speaking out of turn. I did not see your last post.

That's what I did when I ordered mine. Just picked my bike and ordered 2" shorter than the stock ones. Perfect fit.

I thought of doing that but don't wan't to spoil the nice looking stainless steel. I guess that was a wrong choice, I hv thrown away the Barnett wire.

Yeah man, really sucks. I haven't contacted Barnett, it's useless anyway...I'm too far way to ask for exchange. My shipping cost will be more than the cable.

It shouldn't be a problem to only use pull cable, right? so far the only down side is it feel a bit harder to twist, but releasing is faster.

Well, in all actuality it should work. Your car doesn't have a return cable......

My only advice would be this...... Always make sure that everthing is operating freely and without restriction and that the return spring is in good shape. (if that makes sense). That is only my opinion after observing the opertation of the mechanism. I am not in any way qualified or knowledgable on the exact workings of the system.

Anyways, sorry bout your trouble. Just keep working through it. That's why they are called "madifications", sometimes they get the best of you. :furious2:

Hehe...madification...you damn right! Thanks Flox. I'll check with Barnett whether they can mail me a replacement wire.

For future reference (those of us who haven't ordered them yet)...

Does anyone know anything mechanically wrong with ordering too long? I kind of like the long "drooping" cable look anyway (circa "Easy Rider").

This is just speaking from my own personal experiance and having done some research. (my cables were 10" over stock).

The guys that mod Harleys and such will tell you that metrics are a pain in the ass cuz you can't make the cables longer cuz there's not enough return strength on the carb spring. That's not really a problem with the setup on the SS or the ACE. Plus, that's why I ordered exact cables to fit the bike from Barnett. (then just got the over length I wanted). That way I know they worked. The Harley guys are constructing their own cables, that's where it can get tough.

The other thing to watch out for is "routing" of your cables. Just make sure you don't put them in a bind or anything. Turn the bars "all" the way left and right and make sure the throttle returns and the clutch pulls freely. (you don't wanna find out the throttle won't return on the road in the middle of a turn). :veryangry

Ok, that was lengthy. I hope it made sense and helps a bit. Just remember to be patient, most of the people that told me it was too hard to do, didn't have enough patience. :rolleyes5

Here's a pic of my finished product.

Currently I'm using 8" over stock on VLX, and only use the pull cable. No problem so far. Barnett inner wire is very thin & flexible, shouldn't be a problem to have it long.

BTW Flox, checked with Barnett, they said will rinstall a new inner wire if I send my cable back to them. Too costly to do that, so I asked whether the can just mail me the wire.

Thks Flox. Your bar really expose your braided very nicely.
