View Full Version : Spark Plug Hole Threads

My '04 Shadow was service about 500 miles again by the dealer. Yesterday I pulled a plug to see if it was fouled due to changing pipes. Anyway, the plug was fine but my threads in the spark plug hole are crossed. I called the dealership and naturally received no return phone calls. This cross threading had to happen when the bike was serviced. Does anyone have any suggestions about the easiest way to fix this problem? I am going to try to get the dealer to pay for their mistake but I understand it will be almost impossible to prove they crossed the threads. Just for information the plugs were fine and the new pipes have been on for about 3 weeks. No re-jetting was done. The pipes are the Cobra Classic Slash Cut and they sound and look great.

FYI, you can't know that the plugs are fine if you just pulled them out of a cold engine, you have to ride the bike and shut the engine off without idling to get an accurate plug reading. Otherwise, all your reading is your idle mixture. I can pretty much tell you, with the Cobra pipes and NO jet kit, you are running lean.

Thanks Brian, I'm going to put the jet kit in once I get the bike back however, not sure when that will be since I don't know what they are going to do to fix the plug hole. I really appreciate the feed back.

Fan,
If the cross-threading is not too bad, they may be able to just run a tap in the hole and clean up the original threads. Otherwise, you'll be looking at removing the head to sleeve the hole or a replacement head. Personally, I'd prefer the replacement route. Sleeving is OK if I do the work, but I don't trust anyone else to do the job properly. I've seen too many cases where the person doing the machine work is not a trained professional and it comes back to haunt you!
Good luck dealing with the service dept., I hope they're honest for your sake!

The problem is fixed...Only the first couple threads were messed up so all that was done was a tap started. I appreciate the replies and ideas.
