View Full Version : sound adjustment on pipes

I have a 2002 shadow spirit 750. When I bought the bike it already had Vance and Hines Straightshots on it. I love the look but the sound is a little too loud. I temporarily put the stock pipes on and there's no way I want them THAT quiet.

Is there anyway I can modify the V&H to tame the sound a bit? I have tried a slip-on muffler from JC Whitney and it didn't do anything. I was only able to find one muffler to fit over the 2 inch outer diameter of the pipe.

A friend of mine said to try and make a turnable baffle like the one on this web site: turnable baffle (http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/exhaust.htm) .

Oh yeah, I have checked and there are baffles (if you want to call them that) in my V&H. And th get more technical, I believe that stock pipes are 80 decibels and the V&H are around 102 decibels, so I gues I'm looking for something around 90 decibels. Do you guys have any other suggestions?

Thanks

I don't know if this will help, but you might wanna try the hole saw mod on the stock pipes. I did it and its not that loud. I wanted it louder so I poked out the baffles. So if its too queit try the hole saw mod:happy:

This may be a stupid question but are the Big city thunder moster baffels put right in the V&H?

Not a stupid question....basically they are a comercial version of the thumbscrew baffle you posted the instructions for. You may be better off trying to make a set yourself if you have the tools and supplies.

I'm gonna take your advice and make one on my own. In the pics of the Big city thunder moster baffels, I noticed that the thumb screw was attached right to the baffle. This is a big help...thanks.

I saw what you where after and sent you to it . I have no idea what your tools and abillitys are . If you can make a set , make 2 and sell it to your friends at Shadowriders . I know not everyone at this site has $85 bucks to buy a set . Or the tech or tools to fab a set .

I'm assuming the monster baffle can not be used with burbs due to the curve of the pipe. I don't want to lose horsepower in the mid range.

That depends on what set you buy . I could with my Burbs .

Another question about the thumbscrew baffle, does this mod only work with drag pipes? Will it work with tapered pipes like for example the cobra classic tapered?

I believe the thubscrew baffle will work with tapered pipes too. Basically it just to give some backpressure for baffleless pipe.

I found that the thumscrew alone does not work that well in term of sound. BCT baffles has pipe reducer, this combined with the thubscrew creates a deep loud tone. The OD of thumbscrew controls the sound a lot. You can try few different sizes to get the right tone.

I hv fabricate a set of this baffle for my friend HD's, based on the original meassurement. It sounds & performs awesome. Not sure how much is the shipping cost frm here, but I can make this if anyone is interested. Here's a picture for 2 1/8 ID pipe:

Thanks man. I've been busy with my work lately.

Try to make a set and you wont regret it, especially with your Burbs
Very cheap and makes a lot of difference.

I hv tried few different washer set up with this baffle, and turned out the last one in the picture below gives me the deepest & loudest tone, with the right amount of backpressure for my jetting.

I can not make a set . I have the skill just not the tools right now . I may order a set from bctmb .

Hmm....just in case you wanna try, If I'm not wrong there's pipe reducers available with the right diameter. Buy 2 and weld it at the smaller diameter back to back. Drill just one hole about 3/4 inch frm the end for the thumbscrew to go through, put 2 nuts and this will be your mounting bolt to the pipe a well.

For the thumbscrew I use 6mm bolt, cut the bolt head off leaving the all thread, make a cut at the end with small saw just enough to slip in the washer, then JB weld. Thats it.

Since I don't have access to welding tools, I'm gonna try something different. In my local bike shop they have a display for this putty that dries as hard as steel. I'm going to give that a try and hopefully it will be strong enough.

That is what I'm using to stick the washer with bolt, it's called JB weld. 1 portion of resin and 1 portion of hardener. The finish look is like the first picture I post.
