View Full Version : Great for all bikers.....
not sure if you guys know these techniques, but i was reading another thread and someone said they never use the rear brake, so i thought i'd do a little bit of schoolin for those of you who drag your feet at slow speeds.
but first i'd like to remind you that your rear brake is 30% of your braking power. that means if you only use your front brakes then you're only utilizing 70% of your stopping power. even when i'm coasting to an easy stop, i always use both my brakes. but esp when i've gotta brake hard. it'd be like having dual discs up front and disconnecting the hose to one of em! why not use all the power you've got available to you?
when i first started riding, i took the msf class which was fantastic for a beginner, but they didn't really go into too much detail on the slow speed techniques.
anytime you're riding at slow speeds, slightly drag the rear brake, keep the clutch in the middle of the friction zone, keep a bit of throttle up and counterweight. and MOST IMPORTANTLY, look where you wanna go! this will make the bike wanna stand up because of the constant tension between engine and wheel. workin the clutch and throttle keeps the bike from stalling out while still putting power to the rear wheel and draggin the rear brake keeps the bike at the speed you want to go. you can go slow as shit and lean over pretty damn far w/ these moves.
again, the MOST important technique whether riding slow or fast, twisties or parking lot, turn your head and look at where you want the bike to go w/o locking onto/fixating on any one thing.
after a little bit of practice, you can pull tight ass u-turns w/o putting your feet down, w/ or w/o a passenger.

he's super cheese, but he can fuckin ride!

good info there quam, it's true what you say about the clutch brake deal. They did teach us that here at hill air force base and i now use it every time. It makes you alot better rider to keep that chin up and to use your perrifrial vison to see the rest. Same goes for an emergancy manuver, look where you wanna go and not at what your trying to avoid.

i don't mean when you stop, i mean when you're at slow speed.
like when you've got a crew of 20 bikes rollin into a gas station and everyone's trying to either find a pump or somewhere to park.....
or when you've gotta do a u turn. doesn't matter if it's a 10 ft street or a 14 ft street, doin the brake/clutch thing makes a u turn 10xs easier.

This is great info thanks. Maybe with a few pointers I will be able to pass the test. I missed it by three points yesterday, now I have to wait a week to take it again.

Great Info,
Your da MAN..
Taking the MSF course was the best thing I've done as a rider. I had rode a little befor taking it, but I learned a ton of stuff. After taking it I was so much more confident. It's nice to be able to learn u-turns and stuff like that on the bikes they provide, so you aren't as concerned about droping yours. I know a couple guys that have ridden for years, and recently they took the class. They both said they feel much more confident in their slow speed maunvering.
I thought that sounded like Ride Like a Pro advice. It's a good DVD, I've been riding 28 years but I got the DVD over winter and I learned a lot and it made me a much better rider.
oh and quam, Jerry Pallidino does sound like a total fuckin douche. I'm riding out to Marysville, Ohio in July for Homecoming and he's gonna be there - I'll watch him do his thing, but I hope he keeps his gay jokes and shit to himself.

oh yeah, goin fast and nailin corners is fun and technical shit, but the slow speed skills are totally underrated.
i mean most riders need skills in a parking lot or on a narrow side street more than on a race course.
yeah, jerry's super cheese, but it's all great info. a friend let me borrow the riding like a pro tape awhile back and i def learn a ton from it!
tlt, fuck off noob!!
and yeah, i've got some buddies that rode for years before taking the msf course and they all loved it. i'm sure it was frustrating staying under 30mph the whole time, but they learned a lot.
personally i took the msf course 2 days before pickin my bike up and i'm glad i did because as soon as i first sat my ass in the seat i felt completely comfortable on her!
I took mine about 2 months after I got mine. I rode it for the 2 months and I couldn't believe how much more confidence I had after.
Anyone know anybody thats taken the advanced riders course thru MSF?? It shounds like it would be a lot of fun, because you get to learn some trick kinda stuff, and it's all on your own bike. Not to mention you need a motorcycle license to get into it, so you don't have to worry about people like the old ladies in my beginner class that wouldn't go over 10 mph!

Thanks man for posting this. I actually have always done exactly this and wondered how much damage I am doing to my brakes and premature wear every single time I do it. But it helps stabilize so much I have just always done it.
Reading your post is cool, cus now I know its ok :-) And besides smoking a brake pad is way cheaper then getting smoked :-)

I took it and all i got to say is fuckoffnoobfuck.
Thank you
yeah, i got drums in the back so new shoes cost a little more than new pads, but still who cares how much faster the shoes/pads wear out.....i'd rather ride right than be a bike walker.

Wow.. that was helpful.
By the way... it seems to me that we both joined here at the same time, so I am just as much a noob as you. Just cause I haven't posted quite as many times don't count for shit. Normally I would take a fuckoff as a compliment, but you didn't even bother to tell me anything about the course or even if it's worth taking!

What is this course and does anyone know if they offer it in the Denver area?
I wouldnt mind a brush up course, especially if it knocks a few bucks off my insurance.

i have never took that class or any riding class, but i figured that out on my own.I`m not saying that i`m an expert rider or anything but i can pretty much drive through town and never put my feet down.I`t takes some practice to do that but it`s pretty cool when people watch you balancing your bike at a stop light and see their expression.

Visit www.msf-usa.org (http://www.msf-usa.org) and you can look up where the classes are held
hell yeah firefighter, it's especially cool when you're riding amongst a buncha guys who don't really know how to handle their machine at slow speed and have to walk their bikes around.....
